In a remarkable feat of naval engineering, Silversea Cruises has completed its planned lengthening of "Silver Spirit". The ship was sliced in two and inserted with a prebuilt 15m segment to create more public areas and enhance it's facilities during a recent dry dock. The process including a total refurbishment of the existing ship took only 59 days.
Never Before Completed for a Luxury Cruise Ship
This type of lengthening has never before been completed for the extension of a luxury cruise ship. Ship builders Fincantieri completed the dry dock in their Palermo shipyard. The extension will increase the pool area on the sky deck (from 30 to 45m) and allow for the creation of a new aerobics area. Overall, Silver Spirit’s capacity will increase by approximately 12%.
Furniture has been Donated
Another interesting piece of news to come out of the lengthening renovation was the donation of thousands of items from the ship to the city of Chania, on the Greek Island of Crete. The items included sofa's, chairs, curtains, computers, and more to be used in hospitals, nursing homes, and schools throughout the town. Chania a port visited regularly by Silversea was seen as the perfect recipient in need of the donated goods.
